What is Gaga Ball?

Gaga Ball, also known as Octoball, is a fast-paced game played with an inflatable or foam ball in an octagon-shaped pit This is a fun game for kids of varying sizes and athleticism. Kids will need to dodge, jump, and deflect the ball during a game of Gaga Ball, making it a great way to use energy and get exercise! Though the game is generally considered safe, the risk of injury can vary based on the make and quality of a Gaga Ball pit. Here at Hadar Athletic, we offer a foam pit which reduces the risk of injury compared to traditional wooden or hard plastic pits.

Why is Gaga Ball a Great Kids Game?

  1. Lots of fast action for all players. A good aerobic workout and great agility training.
  2. Not as dependent on throwing skills, size, and strength as traditional dodge ball.
  3. Ball speed is reduced from traditional dodge ball reducing risk of injury.
  4. Brings many players into a confined area for facilities looking for fun activities but with limited space.
  5. The game is fun and players quickly pick up on the unique skill set of the game.

How to Play

It’s simple. Players and a ball enter the pit, and when only one player (the winner) and the ball are left in the pit the game is over.

It’s every player for themselves. A player is out if the ball touches them below the knee. The last one in the pit wins. Then everyone hops back in for the next game. To speed the game and keep it within a five-minute time limit, a second ball can be added as players are eliminated. Fast-paced fun that quickly becomes addictive. Players who are out will crowd around the pit to jump back in for the next round. And the rules of the game favor players with different attributes than just the biggest, strongest kids on the playground. If players make contact going for the ball, a foul is called on the player who didn’t play the ball and that player is out for the round. It’s fun high-speed action & contact is not the point of the sport.

The official rules of International Gaga Ball:

  1. All players start with one hand touching a wall of the pit.
  2. The game begins with a referee (or a random player) throwing the ball into the center of the pit.
  3. The players yell ‘GA’ for the first two bounces and ‘BALL’ on the third bounce, after which the ball is in action.
  4. Any player can hit the ball with an open or closed hand.
  5. If a ball touches a player below the knee (even if the player hits them self) they are out and leave the pit. If a player is hit above the knees, play continues.
  6. If a ball is caught on the fly, the player who hit the ball is out.
  7. If a player slaps the ball over the wall and out of the pit, they are called out.
  8. Using the walls of the octagon to aid in jumping and ricochet shots is legal and part of the skills of the game. If a player sits (stationary) on the ledge of the pit they are called out.
  9. Players cannot hold the ball.
  10. A second ball can be thrown in the pit to expedite the end of the game.
  11. The last player standing is the winner of that round.
